20 to 40 concepts: the testing cadence that actually moves CAC

Volume without a hypothesis is just noise you paid for. Here is the cadence that turns creative into a performance lever.

Once spend crosses $100K a month, creative stops being the thing you do after the media plan. It becomes the media plan. The account with more good ideas in market wins, because on Meta and TikTok the creative decides who the ad reaches. Yet most teams still ship a handful of concepts a quarter and wonder why efficiency drifts.

Why the number is 20 to 40

It is not about flooding the feed. It is about giving the algorithm enough distinct signal to keep finding pockets of demand, and giving yourself enough shots that one fatigued ad does not sink the week. Below roughly twenty concepts live, you are one bad week from a scramble. The exact number flexes with spend, but that range is where the account stops being fragile.

Distinct is the word that matters. Twenty crops of the same video is one concept, not twenty. A concept is a different angle: a new hook, a new pain, a new proof, a new format.

The cadence

  • A hypothesis per concept. Every ad enters the account to answer a question. "Does the price-anchoring hook beat the time-saving hook for this segment," not "let's try some stuff."
  • Hooks in batches. Five to ten hooks per core concept, because the first three seconds decide most of the outcome. Rotate them fast.
  • Fast kills. Underperformers get cut in days, not carried for a quarter out of politeness. A kill is a result, not a failure.
  • Weekly review. Same day every week: what won, what to scale, what to kill, what to test next. The engine runs on a schedule, not on vibes.

What it produces

Two things. A steady supply of fresh signal, so the efficiency curve stops bending every time your best ad ages out. And a compounding library of learnings: after a quarter, you know which hooks, pains, and formats work for your buyer, and you stop guessing.

That is the difference between running ads and running a testing program. One hopes the next idea lands. The other makes the next idea more likely to, every single week.
